Swimming Pool Repair: The 411 On The Pool Pump

Dead pump? Don’t panic, we’ve got you covered! Whether you need your pump or motor fixed, or it is time for a replacement, our trained professionals at Pool Knights will get your pool running beautifully again. We understand that repairs and parts can put a strain on your wallet. That’s why we want you to understand how we determine when a pump can be fixed with some new parts, and when it’s more cost effective to just replace it.

Pool Knights will inspect the overall health of your pump first. We check the pump’s internal parts, the housing, and the motor, in order to determine if repair or replacement is the smarter choice. We look at the following key factors:

  • The housing is crack or dry rotted. If the housing shows signs of damage, there may also be problems with the pump basket, lid, or impeller. We’ll check to see if the housing should just be replaced, or if the overall cost of any additional defective parts outweighs a full replacement.
  • Age of the pump. If your pump is older than 15 years, the best solution will be replacement. You’ll save money in the long run, as pumps approaching this age are more apt to breakdown. The expense of maintenance will soon be more than the cost of replacement.
  • The pump has been discontinued. If your pump is no longer being manufactured, replacement parts may be difficult to find. If parts are not available, a new pump will likely be necessary.
  • The pump is made of metal. This is likely a show of age, as bronze and cast iron pumps have been phased out. But if you have been properly maintaining and servicing your pool and its metal pump, you may be finding those replacement parts harder to come by, or more expensive than before. Changing out the pump for a new composite one should probably be your next step. It will save you money and stress in the long term.
